Crowns Q&A

What are crowns?

Crowns are dental restorations used to repair a decaying or damaged tooth. They’re custom crafted coverings that protect your enamel, returning your tooth to its near-original size, shape, and appearance. Once bonded in place, crowns allow you to chew and bite comfortably.

What types of problems can crowns repair?

The team at Frost Family Dental uses crowns to address various problems. They might recommend a crown to:

  • Bolster a tooth with a large filling
  • Attach to a dental implant
  • Restore worn down or broken tooth
  • Make a cosmetic modification
  • Hold a fractured tooth together

You might also benefit from crowns if you have discolored or misshapen teeth.

What does getting crowns involve?

Traditionally, getting a dental crown required at least two appointments, spaced one or two weeks apart. The team at Frost Family Dental offers same-day crowns. This allows you to receive a custom crown in just one appointment.

At the beginning of your consultation, the team conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and takes a series of oral X-rays. They then administer a local anesthetic and prepare your tooth to receive the crown. After removing the decaying or damaged portion of your tooth, the team takes impressions.

Your impressions are uploaded to the CEREC milling machine. The CEREC machine uses your impressions to manufacture a custom crown from a block of porcelain or composite resin. This process takes about 45 minutes. Once the milling machine finishes, the team lines up your crown and bonds it in place with dental cement.

Afterward, they polish your crown, assess your bite, and send you home with a list of care instructions.

How long do crowns last?

Crowns typically last between 10-15 years, but with proper care, you can extend their lifespan. The team at Frost Family Dental recommends brushing twice a day, flossing regularly, and visiting the office twice a year for a professional cleaning and oral exam.

To prevent cracks, chips, or other damage, avoid bad habits like nail-biting, opening objects with your teeth, or biting down on hard objects like popcorn kernels or ice. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw while sleeping, you might also want to wear a nightguard.
